Digitisation Roadshow

The Benalla Art Gallery Collection includes over 1200 works of art by some of the most significant artists in Australian history. Although relatively small, this collection is one of the most significant held by a regional gallery anywhere in the country.

Some of the highlights of the Collection have been previously photographed and widely viewed through exhibitions, publications and online. However, many have not and these include wonderful treasures which have been held, largely unseen, in the Gallery’s Collection store for decades.

Creative Victoria recently selected Benalla Art Gallery as one of three regional public galleries (including Latrobe and Ararat) to undertake a process of digitising their collections. The Creative Victoria Digitisation Roadshow is enabling these galleries to properly photograph, scan and document all the art works held in their collections, and make as many of these as possible available online to a worldwide audience.

In Benalla, the Roadshow is taking place in one of our large exhibition galleries where visitors can watch conservation, research and technical staff in action. Objects which have been digitally captured are presented as a slideshow in the visitor viewing area.

Over the course of the project Benalla Art Gallery will be posting regular updates on the process and the many wonderful items which are finally coming to light. Click on the links below.
